Diabetes in a bottle
If you know me for a longer period of time, you know that I love to state so-called ‘fact or fiction’ statements in my coaching. One of my favorite statements is; ‘1 glass of Coca Cola contains as much sugar compared to 1 glass of fresh orange juice’
Many people still believe this is fiction. Unfortunately, this is a FACT. Especially the word ‘fresh’ makes lots of people think it is healthy. But it is NOT. Both glasses (200 ml per glass) contain about 7 sugar cubes. Which is a lot, as you drink the glass within seconds.
We know from science, that sugary drinks are one of the most important causes of the obesity and diabetes type II crisis. This is because after drinking sugary drinks, your blood sugar goes up like crazy, your body starts to produce insulin, and insulin holds on to your fat mass, it causes for you to have an energy dip after 30 minutes, and for you to be hungry again. This does not only go for sugary drinks, but also eating moments in general (see blog: eating moments). If you keep eating and drinking the whole time, after years your body will get tired of this process, which can cause diabetes type II. Therefore, I call all the sugary drinks; ‘diabetes in a bottle’.
Also, drinking sugary drinks like soda, energy drinks, sport drinks and juices, is super bad for your teeth. We see this now in several countries, where children literally have rotten teeth in their mouth at the age of 1 or 2 years. For example, in the UK, 141 children are admitted to the hospital EVERY DAY to have rotten teeth pulled out. This causes 60.000 missed school days per year.
In short, please STOP giving your children any type of sugary drink and give them (sparkling) water and tea without sugar. Of course, you can make an exception in the weekend, but don’t make it a habit. My advice: if you have left-over bottles of juice; give to somebody you don’t like 😉.
